The modified banknote has the same dimensions and general design as the 500-ruble banknote of 2004 modification.

The colour and graphical design of the front and back of the banknote have been partially changed.

On the front of the modified banknote in the lower part of the left unprinted area to the left of the main image there is a text „МОДИФИКАЦИЯ 2010 ГОДА (2010 modification)”.

Banknotes of 2010 modification have the following main differences:

security fibres of two types are embedded in the paper (two-coloured and one-coloured grey ones);
a security thread is embedded in the paper. It comes out on a surface on the front of the banknote in the shape of a window;
there is a multitone & highlight watermark on the right unprinted area;
on the front of the banknote at the edges of unprinted areas there are fine relief line marks;
on the front of the banknote the colour-shifting effect on the one-coloured area to the left of the main image has been changed;
the height of figures of the left serial number smoothly increases from the left to the right;
on the back of the banknote the main image and the multicoloured ornamental stripe has been changed;
some elements of the image have magnetic properties;
under UV and IR light the banknote images differ in some aspects from the images of the banknotes of previous modifications.

On the front of the note there are two serial numbers that consist of two letters indicating the series followed by seven digits.

Microperforation

When the banknote is held up to the source of light, one can view the note denomination „500” formed by absolutely straight parallel rows of holes perforated in the paper. The area of a banknote with these holes does not feel rough to the touch.

Multitone & highlight watermark

The watermark is located on the right unprinted area and consists of a multitone watermark (the portrait of Peter the Great) and an adjoining highlight watermark — the numeric value of the denomination (value numeral 500). The highlight watermark has elements which are lighter than the background paper and multitone watermark. The numerals are shaded by dark lines and have the effect of volume.

Security thread

The embedded metallised security thread (5-mm width) has repeated demetallised images (straight and inverse oriented value numerals „500” and rhombuses). On the back of the banknote the security thread looks like a grey stripe with dark repeated value numerals „500” divided by rhombuses. When the banknote is held up to the light value numerals „500” and rhombuses look light against a dark background.

Geometrical micropattern formed by parallel lines

In the centre of the front side of the banknote and on the reverse side of the banknote in the upper and lower parts of unprinted areas there are images consisting of fine lines that look like an even background to the naked eye.

Microtext at the edges of the decorative stripe (repeated value numerals „500” divided by dots)

At the top and bottom edges of the decorative stripe there are lines with a microtext formed by repeated value numeral „500” divided by dots.

Blind embossing

Fine coloured line marks on the left edge on the front, and fine lines at the end of the text „БИЛЕТ БАНКА РОССИИ” (The Note of the Bank of Russia) transform to the blind embossing.

Geometrical micropattern formed by parallel lines

Positive microtext (repeated value numeral „500”)

In the top part of the banknote there is a positive microtext in the form of fourteen lines of repeated value numeral „500”.

Change from negative to positive microtext (repeated text „ЦБРФ500”)

At the bottom of the banknote there is a microtext in the form of six stripes with a repeated text „ЦБРФ500” which smoothly changes from negative to positive from the left to the right.

Security features checked by tilting a banknote

Hidden multicoloured image

When the banknote is tilted value numeral „500” appears on the one-coloured area on the front of the banknote. Each character of the value numeral has its own colour. When the banknote is rotated without changing the viewing angle each character changes its colour.

Latent image of the letters „РР” (Kipp-effect)

When a banknote is viewed at an acute angle, letters „РР” become visible on a decorative stripe. The letters become either light on a dark background or dark on a light background depending on the orientation of the banknote.

Changing-image effect on the security thread

The largest fragment of the security thread is visible on the surface of the front of the banknote in the shape of a window. When the banknote is tilted, one can view either repeated value numerals „500” divided by rhombuses or the rainbow effect on this fragment.

Raised print

The text „Билет Банка России” (the Note of the Bank of Russia), the mark for people with impaired sight and the emblem of the Bank of Russia have a raised relief with a tactile effect.
