Yuryevets, the Ivanovo Region, is one of the oldest towns in Russia. It was founded in 1225 by Grand Prince George II of Vladimir, a son of Vsevolod the Big Nest and a grandson of Yury Dolgoruky, to protect the eastern borders of North-Eastern Rus. The town was named Yuryevets-Povolsky (Povolzhsky) after the Grand Prince’s patron saint – Saint George the Victorious. That was the town’s official name until 1796, although the name Yuryevets has become widespread since as early as the middle of the 16th century.

Yuryevets is one of the most eco-friendly areas in Central Russia. The town is nestled on picturesque hills, and its beauty was praised by painters Chernetsov, Savrasov, Levitan, and many others.

The information was provided by the Government of the Ivanovo Region.
