The Saint Petersburg Mint is the oldest Russian and one of the world’s largest enterprises issuing precious metal commemorative coins, coin-like items, and medals. Like Saint Petersburg, the Mint was founded by Peter the Great. It was established in 1724 and is located in the very centre of Saint Petersburg – within the premises of the Peter and Paul Fortress.
As early as in the 18th century, the Saint Petersburg Mint established the traditions of the Russian school of medal-making, which continues to develop today. The Mint issued the first commemorative coins of the Russian Empire, the USSR, and the Russian Federation and made the largest modern five kilo gold and five kilo silver commemorative coins.
Today, the Saint Petersburg Mint issues precious metal commemorative and investment coins, government awards as well as commemorative medals and various tokens.
