The spectacled eider (Somateria fischeri) is a rare and vulnerable bird species in the family Anatidae. In Russia, it breeds in the Arctic zone of Eastern Siberia, along the coastal strip of typical tundras stretching from the Yana River delta in the west to the Pegtymel River delta in the east. Its primary breeding ground is the Indigirka River delta, located in the Allaikhovsky District of the Russian constituent territory Republic of Sakha. The bird inhabits low coastal tundras, predominantly the deltas of Arctic rivers, and rarely ventures further than 50 km from the shoreline. The entire population winters in the ice-free polynyas of the Bering Sea. Unstable ice conditions in the area are likely the spectacled eider’s primary limiting factor. Since the entire global population congregates in a single wintering location, an oil spill within these waters would threaten the existence of the entire species. The spectacled eider’s productivity is declining due to rising predation pressure in the tundras, driven by climate warming, and the simultaneous disappearance of other wildlife that previously sheltered the eider from predators. Also, poaching is widespread during the spectacled eider’s migration along the Chukchi Sea coast.
