Hedgehog in the Fog is a Soviet animated film directed by Yuri Norstein and produced by the Soyuzmultfilm studio in 1975. It is based on Sergei Kozlov's fairy tale of the same name, which was substantially revised when the script was being written.
The film tells a story of Hedgehog who goes astray in the fog on his way to Bear Cub’s place and finds himself in a mysterious world where he meets Eagle-owl, Bat, White Horse and other animals. The personality and image of the main character that tug at the viewers’ heartstrings made the cartoon successful. Hedgehog in the Fog is more than just an animated film – it is a philosophical parable with a deep meaning.
Having captured the hearts of Soviet and international viewers, it has become an iconic piece of animated cinema. According to the 2003 survey of 140 film critics and animators from different countries, Hedgehog in the Fog was recognised as the best animated film of all times.
