Ingushetia is the youngest republic of the Russian Federation. It is located on the northern slopes of the foothill of the Main Caucasian Range, in its central part. Its capital is Magas.

In 1921–1924 Ingushetia formed part of the Mountain Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Mountain ASSR). In 1924, when the Mountain ASSR collapsed, Ingush Autonomous Region was formed. On 4 June 1992, a law was adopted to establish the Republic of Ingushetia within the Russian Federation.

Ingushetia is an agricultural and industrial, mostly rural, republic. The leading area of agriculture is livestock breeding. Favourable weather and climatic conditions as well as the availability of pastures and hayfields promote the development of meat and dual-purpose cattle breeding, sheep breeding and goat breeding in mountainous Ingushetia. Crop production is focused on the growing of grains (wheat, buckwheat, etc.), sunflower, vegetables and potatoes. The republic’s industry is represented primarily by the oil extraction sector. Oil production accounts for 74.6% of the overall industrial production. Food industry is the second most important sector.

Forests (mostly mixed broad-leaved ones) which include valuable wood species (beech, oak, plane tree, etc.) are Ingushetia’s important natural resources.
