The Republic of North Ossetia – Alania is a constituent territory of the Russian Federation. It is a part of the North Caucasian Federal District. Its capital is Vladikavkaz.

The republic is located in the North Caucasus and occupies a part of the Central Fore-Caucasus on the northern slopes of the Main Caucasian Range. Mountains account for 48% of its area.

From November 1920, North Ossetia was a part of the Mountain Republic and, in July 1924, it became an autonomous region. In January 1995, the region got its current name – the Republic of North Ossetia – Alania.

Ossetia – Alania is one of the most multinational Russian territories uniting representatives of over 100 nationalities. As for the peoples inhabiting Ossetia, Ossetians are the most numerous. They are followed by Russians and Ingushes.

The agroindustrial complex as a whole and agriculture as its basic industry are the systemically important sectors of the republic’s economy. The main areas of development of the agroindustrial complex include the growing and processing of grains, processing and canning of vegetables and fruit, development of livestock breeding, poultry and fish farming, processing of milk and manufacturing of a wide range of dairy products as well as the production and bottling of mineral and fresh waters. The core sectors of the republic’s industrial production are food industry, non-ferrous metallurgy, power supply, machine building and metal processing.

The Republic of North Ossetia – Alania is an important tourist destination of both regional and federal significance. Its natural resources are a significant factor promoting the development of the recreational activities, such as sanatorium treatment, mountain climbing and tourism.
