Kirov is a major Russian city and the administrative centre of the Kirov Region. The city is an independent municipality with the status of an urban district. Kirov is located on the Vyatka River 896 km away from Moscow and is one of Russia’s oldest cities.

It was founded in 1374. For almost 200 years, the city was known as Khlynov. In 1780, it was renamed Vyatka, and in 1934, it got its modern name.

From ancient times, the city has been known as a centre of trade and handicraft industry. Vyatka’s economy was based on the manufacture and processing of agricultural products. Small enterprises producing leather, candles, sheepskin, matches and paper made a considerable contribution to Vyatka’s economic potential.

Kirov is a major industrial and transport centre. The main railways connecting the North-West and the Centre with the Urals, Siberia and the Far East as well as with Russia’s northern regions pass through the city. Kirov is well known for aircraft engineering, wood processing, heavy engineering, machine tool building, the light and food industries. The city also produces folk craft goods, such as the famous Dymkovo toys and burr and birch bark souvenirs.
