Vyazma is a Russian city and an administrative centre of the Vyazma district located in the east of the Smolensk Region.
Vyazma was first mentioned in historical documentation back in 1239, which is the official foundation date of the city: Vladimir Rurikovich, the Prince of Smolensk, donated this city to his son Andrey Vladimirovich surnamed ‘Dolgaya Ruka’.
Vyazma stood on important overland trade routes, which made it a centre of trade and handicraft industry. At the same time, more than once, this key location made Vyazma a centre of serious political and military events, including the dispute with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Time of Troubles, the 1812 Patriotic War and the two world wars.
At present, Vyazma continues to be a large industrial centre and an important transport hub.
