The 300th Anniversary of the Russian Fleet
Obverse
the two-headed eagle designed by artist I. Bilibin. The inscriptions along the rim: at the top — "25 РУБЛЕЙ 1996 г." (25 RUBLES 1996), at the bottom — "БАНК РОССИИ" (BANK OF RUSSIA). The letters below indicate the metal sign, the fineness, the fine metal content and the mint trademark.
Reverse
sailing-ships in the Battle of Gangut; to the left above them - a portrait of Admiral-General Fedor Apraksin and the semicircular inscription under it - "Ф.М. АПРАКСИН" (F. M. APRAKSIN). The inscriptions along the rim: at the top on a ribbon - "300-ЛЕТИЕ РОССИЙСКОГО ФЛОТА" (THE 300TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE RUSSIAN FLEET), at the bottom - "ГАНГУТСКОЕ СРАЖЕНИЕ - 1744 г." (THE GANGUT SEA BEATLE 1714).

During the Northern War the vanguard of the Russian galley fleet commanded by Peter the Great defeated the Swedish squadron under the command of Rear-Admiral N. Erenskjold and seized all the 10 enemy ships. The battle took place off the Gangut (Hanko) peninsula from July 27 to August 7, 1714. It was the first major victory won by the Russian navy.
