16 October 2023
Press release

On 16 October 2023, the Bank of Russia puts modified ₽1,000 and ₽5,000 banknotes into circulation.

The modified banknotes have a modern design and improved security features.

The Bank of Russia uses the sights of federal districts in the design of the new banknotes. The ₽1,000 banknote is dedicated to Nizhny Novgorod and the Volga Federal District. The front of the banknote depicts the Nikolskaya Tower of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, and the back features the Museum of History of Statehood of the Tatar People and Republic of Tatarstan in Kazan, the Suyumbike Tower in the Kazan Kremlin, and the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography in Ufa.

The ₽5,000 banknote is dedicated to Yekaterinburg and the Urals Federal District. The main image of the front side is the Europe—Asia stele, the back side depicts the Tale about the Urals statue in Chelyabinsk, and the 66th Parallel (Arctic Circle) stele in Salekhard.

The new banknotes have the same colours as the banknotes of the previous issue: the ₽1,000 banknote is turquoise, and the ₽5,000 banknote is red.

The banknotes bear a QR code containing a link to the Bank of Russia website with detailed information about their design and signs of authenticity.

The banknotes of the 2023 series are legal tender of the Russian Federation and are mandatory for acceptance when paying for any type of goods and services without restrictions at their face value. The modified banknotes will go into circulation gradually and will circulate on a par with banknotes of the 1997 series.
