Bank of Russia issues commemorative coin dedicated to Andrey Sakharov

In 2021, Russia celebrates the 100^th anniversary of the birth of Andrey Sakharov, a prominent scholar and public figure, a member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and the recipient of the 1975 Nobel Peace Prize. To mark this event, on 21 April 2021, the Bank of Russia issues a commemorative silver 2-ruble coin.

The silver 2-ruble coin (fine precious metal content 15.55 g, fineness 925) has a round shape and is 33.0 mm in diameter.

The obverse and reverse sides of the coin have a relief rim along the circumference.

The obverse of the coin features a relief image of the National Coat of Arms of the Russian Federation and the inscriptions ‘РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ’ (RUSSIAN FEDERATION) and ‘БАНК РОССИИ’ (BANK OF RUSSIA), the coin denomination ‘2 РУБЛЯ’ (2 RUBLES), the year of issue ‘2021 г.’ (2021), the chemical symbol of the metal according to Mendeleev’s Periodic Table of Elements, fineness, the St. Petersburg Mint trademark, and fine metal content.

The reverse of the coin features a relief image of A. Sakharov’s portrait, a relief image of the atom diagramme on the right against a stylised background and, between these two images, a facsimile of the academician’s signature, vertically aligned, and his life years — ‘1921’ and ‘1989’ in two lines.

The edge of the coin is corrugated.

The coin is minted in proof quality.

The mintage of the coin is 5,000 pcs.

The new coin is legal tender of the Russian Federation and is mandatory for acceptance for all kinds of payments without any restrictions at its face value.
