Bank of Russia sets rules for secure use of QR codes for payments and transfers

The regulator has approved the standard to enhance the security of transactions using QR codes. Financial institutions and companies from other sectors using QR codes to make payments and transfer funds will be able to develop internal protection measures based on this standard.
The document systematises the threats that may arise at each transaction stage depending on the type of QR codes and describes standard protection measures. Cash deposits and withdrawals via ATMs using QR codes are also subject to certain protection measures.
The standard is of an advisory nature and will come into force on 17 February 2025.
