Retail investor’s profile: Bank of Russia survey results

10 January 2023
News

As the situation in the stock market was uncertain, brokers’ clients decreased their investment in foreign assets, their activity and interest in margin trading in 2022 H1. Over that period, the proportion of minor investors was up. Investors whose portfolios do not exceed 10 million rubles currently account for 41% of assets, as compared to 31% a year before.

Trustees’ clients are older than brokers’ clients and have larger portfolios, which is associated with the established minimum for entering the market, among other things. Furthermore, assets of brokers’ clients are distributed more unevenly: 1% of the wealthiest clients account for 74% of assets, whereas in trust management this figure is 61%. According to the survey, retail investors mostly prefer to conclude contracts online, although clients of trustees sometimes have to visit their offices due to the specifics of signing contracts on individual management strategies.
