Market exits during the pandemic

The policy brief analyses Russian firms’ entries to and exits from the market during the first wave of coronavirus infection and related to it restrictive measures. We compare trends in 2020 with more stable periods of economic development using data from various sources (aggregated data from Rosstat, micro data on enterprises, data from the register of small businesses). Our analysis suggests that there has been a sharp surge in exits from the market and a slowdown in entry of new companies associated with the introduction of restrictive measures. However, by September 2020 the firms dynamics parameters returned to average levels.
