Volga Bulgaria was the first state formed in this region. It was established by Turkic tribes at the turn of the IX–X centuries. In 1236, Bulgaria joined the Genghis Khan Empire and then became a part of the Golden Horde. When the Horde collapsed, a new state – the Kazan Khanate (1438) – appeared. In 1552, the Kazan Khanate was annexed to the Russian state.

In 1920, the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was established. The Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Republic was adopted on 30 August 1990. Since 7 February 1992, the Republic is officially called the Republic of Tatarstan.

Tatarstan is an actively developing region. It is well known in Russia and abroad as a centre of oil production and petrochemistry, the manufacturer of world-famous KAMAZ trucks and Mi helicopters, as well as one of leading Russian agricultural producers.

The Republic is home to peoples with different historical backgrounds and cultural traditions. The combination of at least three types of cultural backgrounds (Turkic, Slavic-Russian, and Finno-Ugric) makes the area unique, with its own original cultural and historical values.
