On issuing of coins of base metals

On 20 April 2017, the Central Bank of the Russian Federation issues commemorative coins of base metals:

  • In denomination of 10 rubles – “Olonets, Republic of Karelia (1137)” of the series “Ancient Towns of Russia”;
  • In denomination of 2 rubles “The Hero City of Kerch” and “The Hero City of Sevastopol”.

Description of the coins:

A coin “Olonets, Republic of Karelia (1137)” is 27.0 mm in diameter, combined, consists of two parts: a disk made of white metal and an outer ring around the disc made of yellow metal. The coin has the rim raised on both sides of the coin along the circumference. The edge of the coin is corrugated and has the inscription “ДЕСЯТЬ РУБЛЕЙ” (TEN RUBLES) recurring twice and divided by asterisks.

The obverse side of the coin has inscriptions along the circumference: “БАНК РОССИИ” (BANK OF RUSSIA) on top, “2017” at the bottom. On the left and on the right sides of the outer ring of the coin there are stylized images of laurel and oak branches respectively, going over to the disc. In the centre of the disc there is an indication of the face value of the coin “10 РУБЛЕЙ” (10 RUBLES). Inside the figure “0” there is a protective element in the form of the figure “10” and an inscription “РУБ” (RUB) visible when changing angles of vision. In the lower part of the disc there is a trademark of a Mint.

The reverse side of the coin has a relief image of the panorama of the town of Olonets on the disc, and the emblem of Olonets on top. There are inscriptions on the ring along the circumference: “ДРЕВНИЕ ГОРОДА РОССИИ” (ANCIENT TOWNS OF RUSSIA) on top and “ОЛОНЕЦ” (OLONETS) at the bottom.

The mintage of the coin is 5000000 pcs.

Coins “The Hero City of Kerch” and “The Hero City of Sevastopol” are 23.0 mm in diameter, white in colour and have the rim raised on the obverse and reverse sides of the coins along the circumference. The edge of the coins is corrugated.

The obverse side of the coins has an indication of the face value of the coins “2 РУБЛЯ” (2 RUBLES) in two lines in the center of the disc. There is an inscription below — “БАНК РОССИИ” (BANK OF RUSSIA) and the year of issue “2017” under it. On the left and on the right there is a stylized image of a plant branch. In the right part of the disc there is a trademark of a Mint.

The reverse side:

  • of the coin “The Hero City of Kerch” has the image of Kerch-Eltigen landing operation in the centre, the image of the medal “Gold Star” in the left part, and the inscription “КЕРЧЬ” (KERCH) along the circumference at the bottom.
  • of the coin “The Hero City of Sevastopol” has the images of soldiers and the Monument to the Scuttled Ships, the image of the medal “Gold Star” in the left part, and the inscription “СЕВАСТОПОЛЬ” (SEVASTOPOL) along the circumference at the bottom.

The mintage of the coins is 5000000 pcs of each design.

The issued coins are legal tender of the Russian Federation. They are obligatory for acceptance for all kinds of payments without any restrictions at their face value.
