Rare ancient Russian coins appear in the Bank of Russia museum

The Bank of Russia museum has enriched its collection with srebreniks, ancient coins minted in early XI century under the rule of Vladimir the Great.

The coins date back to the period of Christianisation of the Kievan Rus’ when first Russian coins – patterned after Byzantine samples – were minted. The obverse of srebreniks features a crowned prince with a trident, a symbol of power. Besides, the coins feature religious symbols – a cross, the face of Jesus Crist with a halo and monogram ‘ИС ХС’ (abbreviation for Jesus Christ). The examination of coins revealed their similarity with srebreniks found in Nizhyn and Kiev treasures in 1852 and 1876. For the moment about 800 such coins have been found.
